Summary: Kuttikrishnan (Shankar), the only son of martinet single mother Amminiyamma (K.P.A.C. Lalitha), gets attracted to Devayani (Menaka), daughter of poor lineman Pappan (Thilakan). Amminiyamma agrees to the marriage on condition that Devayani's family give 35 sovereigns in gold as dowry. As per Kuttikrishnan's grandfather's (Nedumudi) advice, Pappan & family borrows the gold & conducts the wedding. However, plans for returning the gold is foiled when Amminiyamma puts the gold under lock & key. (by iceblox)
