Summary: Provoked by forbidden passions, Lester Burnham (Spacey) decides to make a few changes in his rut of a life, changes that are less midlife crisis than adolescence reborn. The freer he gets, the happier he gets, which is even more maddening to his wife, Carolyn (Bening), and daughter Jane (Birch) --especially when he turns his lustful gaze toward Jane's friend, the sultry Angela (Suvari). American Beauty is an excellent film. It seems that many different things are taking place in it, but they all come together in a way. And the ending of it all is just perfect.
Metafórico, o roteiro de Alan Ball faz uma crítica inteligentíssima à sociedade norte-americana e condena o american way of life de forma brusca e sensata. Um dos filmes mais inteligentes do século XXI, no seu último ano.
Isn't it sad that when a certain type of (very good) film receives attention and praise, there's always such a vehemently opposed reaction? It's black comedy that works, that looks great, that gives a fucking incredible cast some incredible parts. Make of that what you will.
The acting is pretty atrocious, not helped by the stilted dialogue -- it's mind-blowingly heavy-handed. One could even make the argument that what's being said here doesn't need to be said at all, and they'd probably be right (it can get pretty dubious). Despite that, the film comes together so well by the end, it's a shame that the rest isn't sculpted so perfectly. All of these characters and events interweave through the film, and at the end they're pulled tight. It's kind of masterful.
