Pretty fun doc, though it's not very informative and it rushes past the content. Still, you'll end up with a bunch of movies you just HAVE to check out.

Robert Forster narrates this primer for Grindhouse cinema that features clips with Landis, Fred Olen Ray, Joe Dante, Herschell Gordon Lewis, Larry Cohen, Jack Hill, and many others interspersed with clips from hundreds of movies. It makes the distinction between exploitation and grindhouse, but with a runtime of only 80 minutes some stuff is given very little time and many subgenres like nunsploitation are completely overlooked. I would like to have seen it at a 3 hour runtime.

Some interesting takes on Grindhouse (Landis and the Passion of the Christ is particularly good) and its impact on society and cinema.

"American Grindhouse seems to miss the irony of what the recent proliferation of faux-exploitation films actually partially represents." - Chuck Bowen

Not the best documentary that could have been made on the subject of American Grindhouse cinema, but still enjoyable viewing. The amount of films referenced alone makes you want to grab a notepad.

An exploitative docu about exploitation. Rounded, informative, and fun. Well-chosen interviewees and it takes itself just as seriously as its subject requires. If you find grindhouse cinema entertaining and interesting and wonderful in itself or for what it represents, this is a good watch. At the very least you'll come from it with about 100 films swirling around in your head that you want to see.
