Not quite as good as "Singing in the Rain," but still a fine musical. The title ballet is wonderful.

Musicals are growing on me or maybe its just Gene Kelly. The 17 minute ballet is a certain highlight.

Joyful and wide-eyed entertainment in glorious Technicolor. As per usual for musicals, plot is just an excuse for singing and dancing and playing music. Seeing how Gene Kelly is responsible for choreography, it's no wonder that this part of the movie is flawless. But the plot is very, very thin, and ends just too abruptly. One of the good MGM musicals, but not among the best.

Many memorable songs and scenes, plenty of colour and sound. Though the story isn't a great thing, is well done and quite good artistically, the characters have chemistry and well, all their movements are just wonderful to see.

A very weak plot is saved by Gershwin's music, great dance numbers by both Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron and a fantastic fantasy ballet number set to Gershwin's Concerto in F, which is one of my favourite piece's of his, made this a somewhat entertaining watch.

Kelly is a gifted choreographer. He revels in using props and scenery to enhance the complex dance routines, especially in the climactic 16 minute ballet sequence. But the presence of a 16 minute ballet sequence is troubling, to say the least. [Full Review]

Well, the dancing was fantastic! Kelly was so good. And there were some nice songs too. The ballet at the end of the film was beautiful and very well choreographed. The colours were gorgeous too. However, the whole thing was let down by the very thin plot. You could tell it was just an excuse for singing and dancing. There’s this strange, thrown-together love triangle and I just wasn’t interested after a while. Goddamn, that Gene Kelly was charming though.

As bombastic as the 50/60's American musicals got, certainly the top of the line for MGM. Gershwin, Kelly, Ballet, France, amazing use of colour, it's all there.

Often insufferable in a way only 50s movie can be. The romance triangle plot held my attention, barely, and the extended dance at the end made me promise myself to stay away from musicals altogether (except for those with Astaire & Rogers - them I really like).

Extra points for having Gershwin's Concerto in F complete with no break. I frankly prefer it to his more well known Rhapsody in Blue and the choreography for the piece really works for me. Kelly is always good Leslie Caron could do nothing and I would watch her do it with rapt attention.

Good music, good dancing, good acting, and a good story. It just falls so far behind the excellence of Singin' in the Rain that it's hard to imagine the same people were involved.
