Hurt is generally an actor worth watching, but here he's given a script that's little more than Crisp's most famous aphorisms wrapped around fairly bland dialogue. With so little to work with, it's a small wonder the film comes across as false and hollow as it does.

4tunately this has Hurt (whose eyes alone convey a world of subtle emotion) since it provides almost no sense of an inner-life 4 Crisp. Although Crisp does manage 2 connect w/ 2 characters, 4 the most part he remains an unknowable celebrity fount of aphorisms; a gay Yoda on a mountaintop who impresses the hell out of us w/ his running stream of memorable quotes w/out ever letting us really see the man behind the image. But perhaps that story was already told in his show, the Naked Civil Servant?
