Summary: In fourteenth-century England, peasant girl Christine Carpenter is so attracted to a statue of the Virgin Mary that the local priest (who lusts after her) suggests she be walled up in the church as an anchoress, a holy woman with responsibility for blessing the villagers. A medieval experience - like in a Bergman film - contrasting the natural world and official religiosity. The effect is naturally foreign and weird. It freaks you out.

Fascinating subject matter. This film is beautiful to look and loaded with imagery and meaning. However I am not sure that everyone wants to work that hard!
