Summary: One of the "Censored 11" banned from TV syndication by United Artists in 1968 for alleged racism. A little black boy is hired to kill a cat, but the feline escapes and proceeds to play tricks on the kid, pretending he's a ghost come back to haunt his "killer".
I guess by this point, Chuck Jones was tired of being deemed the cute cartoon maker at WB, so this wretchedly racist cartoon was the result. Of the Censored Eleven cartoons I've watched so far, this has to be one of the worst in terms of horrendous racial stereotyping.
I was fine with it until the very, very end. Yes, "Little Sambo" is a racist caricature, but so was Yosemite Sam, every Irishman, Asian, etc. in Looney Tunes. Caricatures is how virtually all humans are portrayed in the series. (Granted, the dice bit in this short went way too far) However, I adore cats, and the fun-loving feline being eviscerated with a shotgun blast at the end was not the least bit funny. The cold-blooded killing of the cat destroyed all the humor in the work. A lousy short.
Terribly, terribly racist. I like to think that we have come a long way since 1944 in our attitudes toward cats (though there is still room for improvement in this cat-hating society). The only funny bit is where the cat goes "boo" in front of the mirror and is immediately startled (to find that his white paint had washed off).
