Grim and unguarded in its nature, Gerald Karlg's gloomy film is both a fascinating and frightening piece of 80s cinema. I sat there in front of the screen almost feeling guilty for drinking coffee. Not a daily incident.

There is a moment in Angst when the dachshund goes from the shock of an intruder ripping away its family to the ANGST of the title - "so who's feeding me?" The perfect length - too short and you're left with a well that's it?? and too long you're all okay that's enough ... If there has ever been a movie that needed a Jackie Chan style blooper real over the credits

With the use of inventive camera-work, a near-constant inner monologue for the lead, and atmospheric sound and music, Angst delivers a visceral, affecting, and ahead-of-its-time experience. Hearing the murderer's continuous thoughts and memories of his heinous acts, coupled with the unblinkingly procedural approach effectively drops the viewer into a very unsettling passenger seat of a nervous and sadistically indulgent ride.

An intensely nervous and frenetic film, founded on shaky and interesting camerawork, a great performance by Leder and an atmospheric synth soundtrack. Another forgotten gem.

They let this crazy son of a bitch out of jail and the first thing he does is kill some people. Well not the first thing, first he goes to a diner and eats a sausage with some zeal. He also eye's some ladies in the diner like he's going to bum rape them and they get freaked out. Okay then he kills some people, but overall a good flick.

Man just get down to brass tacks and beat the shit out of me. Angst took Howe’s camera tricks from Seconds and put them in the hands of a serial killer. So ingenious it elevates smut to high art - I clapped at a vomiting scene, I don’t know what that makes me, but the way the film just propels itself through its awfulness with sheer will is something beautiful.

When a grimy low budget aesthetic combines with highly skilled technique, you get a great movie like Angst. Gritty, frightening, and masterfully shot, this is the kind of unique film I seek regularly but rarely find. The lead actor provides a great blend of psychosis and self-indulgent over confidence. The inventive camerawork, though occasionally too jittery, is hugely fun to watch. And the narration is suitably off putting. It's apparent what a huge influence this film was on Gasper Noe.

Kragl is a one-film wonder, and in some early scenes the rough camerawork worried me a bit, but later that changed to astonishment at his directorial know-how, ingenuity and care. The psychoanalytic subtext also raised doubts, but it's thankfully subtler than usual. Although similar to Maniac (1980) and a probable inspiration to many successors, Angst stands alone as an artistically superior movie. It is at once shocking and tasteful, minimalistic and rich.

There didn't seem to be too much to this other than some neat camerawork and a deranged guy with childhood problems murdering people because it literally makes him cum. That's cool I guess. Watch this with your girlfriend.

Difficult to judge this undoubtedly beautifully crafted work objectively (those overhead shots are simply stunning), and Leder's demented, wild-eyed lead (bringing to mind Kinski in his prime) is something to see; it's a shame that it is all put to service on such morbidly and irredeemably unpleasant material (as if the home invasion from CLOCKWORK ORANGE was stretched to feature length). Its positive attributes are overwhelming and compelling, so it really deserves the benefit of the doubt.

For a serial killer slasher flick, it's a cut (ho-ho) above the rest. Erwin Leder is pretty brilliant as the psychopath, transitioning from calm, contained pervert to manic aggressive killer very convincingly, all the while his almost constant narration sounds creepily restrained. The last third of this film is really intense, especially if you're a sick fuck like me and start identifying with the psychopath too much.

Angst is meditation on the absurdity to exist as a human in this weird constellation called universe. In nature, there isn't such a thing called murder and murder is the junction point of nature and human culture: its like a vortex separating us from nature and each time one tries to be in 'absolute' unity with the other world as our character there, it should be a form of transgression. Besides, what a great camerawork! Miixture of sublime and painfully mundane. Salutations Kargl!

This film is good and it feels a little too real (for some reason, watching the killer sweat after wrestling with a woman, and then needing water, felt too real for me), but the grossest thing about this film is the up-close shots of the killer eating a sausage. Those chewing noises -- ugh. I will never watch this again.

Based on Peter Kürten (one of the inspirations of M) as much as on Werner Kniesek, this seems less about the killer's angst than about his energy and excitement, which are conveyed very effectively via a camera that mostly stays very closely and tightly focused on the protagonist, or expressionistically shows his perspective, but at other times rises very high above the human figures, as if to emphasise the absurdity of the movements and actions we undertake for our own all-consuming purposes.

This movie definitely has an artistic value owing mostly to its unique cinematography. Overall directing may not be groundbreaking, still good though. It would have been great to apply such a skill to an actual story with actual points instead of making some weird, an hour long commentary on Austrian court system... if I got it right... if it even had any.

The ethereal synth choir score is so simple but so fantastic. I could listen to it all day. Kind of feels to me like a hybrid of Juraj Herz' 'The Cremator' and Andrzej Zulawski's 'Possession' so if you're a fan of either of those check this out and vise versa.

Expertly shot, directed, and acted only to end up a vacuous (fantasized) snuff film. Whereas other films about similar subject matter had some other, overarching point that made the excursion into the grotesque somehow worth the discomfort (e.g., Clockwork Orange, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer), there's not really much here, besides maybe an overly intimate character study of a fantastically deranged psychopath. May as well be a Dahmer documentary... Honestly, I regret watching this.

As visceral and assaultive as this grimy home invasion movie is, it somehow sidesteps the trappings of the exploitation genre. Fine acting and cinematography and that certain indefinable something go a long way in making this rather unpleasent morsel well worth seeking out.

A deeply unsettling look inside the mind of a psychopath. This shares some of the same tones as Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. That is both good and bad. Good: chilling, methodical character design great camera work. Bad: I'm never watching this again.

An interesting contrast to a film like Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer this is a close portrait of a man, recently released from jail, driven by an urge to kill. The way it's filmed is very effective at providing a sense of urgency and disorientation and the narration is not much of a barrier to the horror, but it's just not something I find interesting to watch.

Wow!! Don't know how I missed this one. Maybe since it's foreign, obscure and was banned in Europe. Excellent horror/thriller. Similar to Halloween, the cinematography and music elevated it to the highest level. The lead actor is great as well.

As a portrait of a serial killer movie Angst follows an unusual way for storytelling. I cannot say it follows a subjective way but rather "intimate".

Angst is an unusual psychopath killer movie that came before its time, from a country that isn't known for cinematic originality. It's not a fun movie. In fact it's one of the more realistic killer movies I know. Cinematography is very artistic - lots of experimentation with hand-held camera to set the atmosphere. Story is psychological portrait of sadist psycho, whom we get to know from first person voice-over narration. I didn't enjoy this film much, but it's worth seeing.

cinematography and sound carry that certain unsettling 80s zombie movie vibe. there's unease to everything, and some of the imagery is flat out disturbing. however, it would've worked immensely better, if the killer's distinct modus operandi wasn't bordering on haphazard goofiness. also, that cute little dog, which was surely meant to contrast the mayhem, ended up being more of a distraction, almost a comic relief.

First of all kudos to Criticker for recommending me this movie. The music of this movie is really notable. Apart from what the summary and the genre already describes, this movie is really unconventional and unpredictable but engaging nonetheless. The camera work and the cinematography is also top notch. Few inconsistencies exist but they don't shadow the movie in any significant way. Check out the 86 minute uncut version.Sad to note that Gerald Kargl was a one film wonder.

"Angst" is right. This portrait of a serial killer is nowhere hear engaging as a certain Henry's, and the brutality shown is surprisingly tame for the era. Which is to say nothing of how it's presented, with an incredible performance by Erwin Leder as he narrates his deranged fantasies while accompanied by a pseudo-documentary real-time camera. Unfortunately he's marred by his own boilerplate abusive backstory, and there's no conflict between him and his victims. Hard to recommend to anyone.

A very intense depiction of insanity and murder. I gotta say that the soundtrack was getting on my nerves; like, i thought it worked at times but it became so frequent i couldn't stand it. But that's pretty much the one thing i didn't care for. The camera work was incredibly good, there were so many great shots. The story is simple and works perfectly well.
