Summary: Antoine and Colette is the second film — a short — in François Truffaut's series about Antoine Doinel. Catches up with Antoine Doinel as a solitary 17-year-old who works at Phillips manufacturing LPs to support himself. He meets Colette, a high-school student, at a concert and falls in love for the first time. The film traces his awkward courtship of the icy Colette, who never reciprocates.
I don't have any sympathy for Antoine in this film. He stalks a woman who never seems especially interested in him, and whom he even admits "isn't his type". He sends her a love letter which she responds to in a way that came across to me as a friendly rejection. He doesn't take the hint and tries to take her against her will, only to be heartbroken when she resists. I don't much like Colette either, but I can at least understand where she's coming from.
The legacy of Antoine Doinel continues in this second film with the same gut-hitting truth. 400 Blows defined youth with such a perfectly honest quality, and the same is done here for young romance. The frustration that Antoine encounters when he thinks he's done everything right is simply and magnificently human. The final scene of Antoine awkwardly consigned to his evening spent with Colette's parents is uniquely profound.
A fitting follow-up to The 400 Blows. Very romantic and nostalgic, with a charming performance from Jean-Pierre Leaud. Colette is the most interesting (if not the nicest) of all the women Antoine eventually falls in love with.
We can see that you don´t need two hours to tell a great story. That´s a film where the delights and pains of love are shown in a poetic and beautiful way.
Antoine falls for a cold teenage Parisian enchantress. I love the scene where he gives her the French maul in the theatre. Dude went for it -- gotta give him that.
#1181 - 09 agustos 10, silivride & truffaut, basarili bir hikaye anlatmak icin 2 saate ihtiyaci olmadigini kanitlayarak ortaya cok naif ve onemli bir film cikarmis. evet, 20'li yaslarda asik olmak boyledir. (bunu soylerken 17 yasindayim)
Antoine et Colette portrays a wise understanding of the pains and joys of human life, contrasting the revelatory influx of emotion to a general loner's life with the pain of rejection when such feelings aren't reciprocated. Aesthetically lush, it also proves that romantic comedy needn't want for intellectual prowess. Quietly compelling.
