The acting, directing and cinematography are more than able, and it's just barely possible to figure out everyone's motives in time for the eponymous duel. The trouble is that not one of the characters is fleshed-out to the point of being relatable, unlikable, or at all substantial. Chekhov's story is distinctive and interesting, and Mary Bing's script clearly robs it of its rightful power.

The Duel is a beautifully shot period piece that doesn't show enough conflict to make the conflicts feel important. Acting and directing are up to par, but the lack of tension in the writing majorly hold The Duel back from being anything more than pedestrian.
