Summary: Based on Joseph Conrad's Heart Of Darkness, this is a controversial addition to the multitude of Vietnam war movies in existence. Set in 1969 Vietnam, we follow U.S. Special Forces Captain Willard on his mission up a river into Cambodia to assassinate a renegade Green Beret who has set himself up as a God among a local tribe. It's disappointing that most people in the future are going to have this version as what they think of when Apocalypse Now is mentioned. Forget the French plantation scenes, boring and out of place as they are. What really wrecks this in my eyes is Willard stealing Kilgore's surfboard. Because more than anything this film needed an awkwardly inserted frat bonding experience and fucking up Duvall's exit.

Epic story following troops as they go upriver in Vietnam. This classic film has amazing actors and a brilliant script, which follows Conrad's Heart of Darkness. There are so many perfect scenes, in particular the flight of the helicopters as they bomb a small village to the sound of Ride of the Valkyries.

Simply brilliant. Coppola creates an utterly convincing and chaotic war-zone with some amazing cinematography and incredibly detailed use of sound. Top class performances from Sheen, Duvall and Brando ensure that the brilliant dialogue is delivered with great effect.
