Cruel and fabulous history movie of Mel Gibson, which I like very much. It is not for children because of some violent action scenes. I did not know these Maya's were so violent among each other. Non-stop action and great nature they live in.

Opens by depicting a form of human life with a more visceral and intimate connection to the natural milieu, a world then shattered through encountering another form of life, one which remains visceral but brutal, destructive, and all-consuming. The symbolic aspects are clear, without being overdone, and even though it develops into a conventional chase film, and contains some poor dialogue, there are elements of a popularised, more rudimentary "Malickian" vision here. Gibson is at least trying.

I love it when a movie manages to lift me out of my laughably drab existence and transport me to another place and time. Apocalypto is an amazing fever dream, intense and beautiful and brutal and uncomfortable. Gibson, you might be a lunatic asshole, but I have to give you this one.

Apocalypto is the kind of movie that you go in expecting something completely different than what you get. The world Mel Gibson so brilliantly creates is so full of life and wonder that it's hard for me to imagine anyone would not be completely blown away by it. It's so enchantingly shot with marvelous scenes that approach Hitchcock or Lynch in terms of design. Apocalypto is the kind of movie that will surely be bashed by many but absolutely adored by me.

This is one of the most intense, brutal movies you'll ever see, with some of the most totally committed acting from a no-name cast. Filled to the brim with unforgettable, unsettling imagery, this is a work of art with Mel Gibson at the absolute top of his game. The human sacrifice scene right in the middle is one of the most intense, harrowing, stressful sequences I've ever seen on film.

Finally! A movie where someone eats tapir balls! This really is a good action movie, though. The actors do a good job even though most are amateurs. The violence gets pretty brutal (the disturbing human sacrifice sequence is one of the best parts of the movie, though) but it's not as extreme as many reviews make it out to be. The music is pretty sucky, though.

Apocalypto's bold choices of exotic locale and cast are a breath of fresh air from the get-go, even more so because for a "cultural" film it's so accessible. It quickly emerges that this is not some message-laden eco-docu-drama, it's a high-octane action film with a dynamic energy to rival the likes of Run Lola Run, Speed or The Fugitive. The crowd scenes in particular are mesmerising and mind-boggling... the chases, rough-hewn but A1 entertainment. Mucho respect for Mr Gibson. Whale of a time.

Visually stunning, mystically enlightening. Apocalytpo is a huge accomplishment for Mel Gibson and everyone involved in the making of this film, giving us the viewers, a chance to divulge into the history of the Mayan culture. Some truly breathtaking shots and a real effort was made to keep this as authentic and realistic as possible. This film will satisfy anyone's curiosity into the way of life and survival of these people. Unspoilt and simple, yet action packed and real.

Apocalypto is a brutally gorgeous historical art film about a fall of a mighty civilization. Despite certain historical inaccuracies this is an extremely well-made historical fiction with an epic soundtrack, beautiful setting and great performances from the cast with the Mayan language giving the film authenticity you don't get with most films based in history.

I honestly believe that if Mel Gibson hadn't of become such an intolerable pillock in recent years more people would like this film. An ode to the power of real massive sets, manual labor and only using cgi supportively. This happens when hundreds of great artists in all their respective fields come together and have the opportunity to go all the way: a super engrossing timetravel to a mysterious place that feels real in every little detail. We're currently in a time where underpaid cg-artists lazily (not them, the directors) often have to carry all the weight, and productions like Apocalypto are heavily missed

Despite the gut wrenching violence, which is merely distasteeful, this is a very personal and idiosyncratic work of art. Gibson is a powerful though not particularly subtle talent. A certain sadomasochistic obsession with mutilation, ritualistic violence and sexual violation run through all of his work.

A brilliant, visceral, violent chase movie from Mel Gibson. So what if the man's gone off the deep end, he still makes intense and exciting films. This one's a visual knockout. Incredible concept, and some exceptional execution. But I didn't like his portrayal of the ancient civilization; we only saw the savage side of the mayans. This effected portions of the story in that I wish I could've seen more of what motivated Jaguar Paw, but it also left the whole film feeling fairly shallow. The imagery was probably the strongest part of Apocalypto, and the filmmaking itself was ok, but it was the poor characters and flat portryal of the mayans that nearly ruined the film.

Hilarious. Seriously, as the violence went on, I found myself laughing at its absurdity way more than...whatever the desired effect was. Also for being so "historically accurate" with using Mayan language, You can't help but laugh when the subtitles read "He's fucked"

People belittling this film for a wafer thin storyline, could, if they wanted to, belittle any film in similar fashion. This is "The Naked Prey" meets "Avatar" and a hell of a lot better than both: more intense, beautifully and imaginatively shot, breath-holding stuff from start to finish. MG does a fantastic job of making the villagers human, carefree and likable so that we really care for their plight. This was never meant as an accurate history, but as an incredible, tense action adventure.

I imagine this film gets more negative criticism than it deserves because of Mel Gibson ostracizing himself entirely with really stupid comments before it came out. It's actually a very engaging story that's shot beautifully. Besides a few plot moments that were too coincidental and one that was down right ridiculous (near the end to the woman in cave) I find myself completely absorbed and loving this film. Kudos for not selling out and having them speak English.

This film has some fatal flaws with its interpretation of Mayans and strays far into pulp territory but it's still admirable for what it achieves. This is Mel Gibson's most ambitious film to date and he at least tries to use foreign language as a character building device instead of having them all speak English. Even with its problems I still think this transcends your typical Hollywood schlock and tries to be much more which is perfectly respectable.

Conceived as a chase film, I found the first half - focusing on the mayan society and the destruction of it - much more interesting than the latter, which entirely sticks to the original concept. Beautifully shot, though, and at worst, the chase is excellent.

I choose to judge Gibson by his work, not his personality or beliefs. And I must say I'm quite impressed by Apocalypto - high motion epic chase action flick. What I found very respectful about this film, is Gibson's decision to cast unprofessional actors (who did a great job here) and use foreign language. Narrative is mostly visual anyway. Also (almost) no CGI, now that's really groundbreaking in todays Hollywood.

The crappy subtitle writing ("He's fucked" & the whole dialogue about "balls") made me flinch a few times, but otherwise this was a great movie. Apocalypto is currently Mel Gibson's magnum opus; a visually beautiful and brutal examination of fear, family, violence and the fall of once great civilizations. Essentially a large chase scene, it is unforgiving, merciless, yet somehow manages to create a hopeful optimism at its center against the relentless force of overpowering inevitability and destiny. Any film goer owes it to themselves to go on the visceral adventure that is Apocalypto.

It was alright. It didn't have much in the way of a story. It was just the main character moving from one place to another, with a bunch of gratuitous violence and gore in between. I guess I liked seeing the Mayan culture. However, even though I have very little knowledge about Mayan history, it all seemed a bit shallow. They at least tried to give the antagonists character development, which I appreciated. Not awful, but ultimately forgettable.

With this Gibson proves that no matter how bad of a person or actor he is, he has a future in direction. Apocalypto feels curiously old-fashioned, and by "old-fashioned" I mean it feel like the work of Griffith or early DeMille. The fact that a chase takes up half the film, the fact that the entirety is spoken in ancient Mayan, the brutal violence and ruthless verisimilitude (even through historical errors) makes this film a welcome surprise. I can't wait to see what Gibson comes up with next.

Some plot points are a bit childish (the eclipse, the Home Alone with jungle traps, the flooding cave), but the rest is nice. I found it interesting how they show the upper class enemies having no regards for life, the suffering poor, the beliefs involving bloodsheds, and the warrior class just helping along: it is kind of mirrored in the conquistadors coming with their own priests and soldiers already, and knowing history. And the old man story about Man always wanting more

While beautiful to look at, Apocalypto is rather dull in the head. There's not much being said here, and what is being said is so aimlessly ambigious that critics still argue whether or not the film actually supports colonialism. The main point, however, is that none of this really matters since the film focuses almost entirely on the visuals and intense action scenes.
