Brilliantly animated, but the film is a mess no matter what cut you watch and it's obvious that Williams had no real vision for the film

scored after watching the recobbled cut. Most likely the best animation I have ever seen, the time Williams took in order to create this movie shows. Shame about the stories tragic background, and the fact that is incomplete :(

My rating is for the Recobbled Cut. The other two versions are not worth your time.

Despite what you may initially think, The Thief and the Cobbler actually refers to the studio and it's treatment of the animated footage. The beautiful animation can stand on its own (it can only really be described as MC Escher in motion), but the music, (studio's) horrible line-reads, and unnecessary dialogue and narration assume the very least of its audience and are absolutely cringe-worthy. The film is much better viewed with the sound turned off.

After Williams's defection from the project, there would appear to have been some belated effort to bring the thing into conformance with Disney's most recent blockbusters, especially (obviously) Aladdin. But the Williams film has a look all its own, and a far better look than Aladdin's: wide stylistic variety spanning from Ancient to Op; sophisticated sense of pattern and color; visual wit; clarity of action; perfect timing.

Too many cooks definitely spoiled this broth. It often seemed like the animators working in this were too in love with their piece to worry about flow or story. As a result, you have sometimes beautiful moments strung with ugly ones. It's made all the worse considering it was never properly finished. A lot of the characters were neither visually nor personally appealing to me.

Score for Recobbled cut, obviously. Watching this made me rather depressed that such a unique masterpiece was mangled to such an extent.

This score is for what I imagine it should have been after watching the recobbled cut. I feel like whoever was responsible for the destruction/dissolution of this film should probably be in jail. Some wealthy philanthropist should pay a bunch of animators to restore it.

My score is for The Thief and the Cobbler: The Recobbled Cut, not this travesty.

Score is for the "recobbled cut" of The Thief and the Cobbler. Western animation at its finest.

Review based on the "Recobbled Edition". The animation and the plot are fantastic in this movie, but the dialog and voice acting (though there isn't much) fall short and make this movie far less than it should be. Vincent Price does a great job but his rhyming dialog could be better. The characters just seem to have no personality.

Credit to Williams for his absolutely stunning animation. He plays with geometry and perspective in ways that evoke Escher and cubism. At times the choices he makes with regards to perspective look like the kind of mistakes an amateur (or child) would make, but are done with brilliant inventiveness and style. He also populates his story with likeable characters and loads of fantastic visual gags. The "Recobbled" fan edit, however, suffers from major overkill.

This rating/review applies to the version briefly released to theatres. Dunno about the other versions, but I like this version just fine as it is. Creative, fun, and of course there's only one Vincent Price

Even in it's incomplete form this is a fine film. I was expecting to watch a film that had alot of potential, if it was ever completed. I was wrong, it was a joy to watch (although it is a shame it was never completed). The review obviously for the Recobbled Cut.

After watching the Recobbled Cut I can honestly say that this might be the greatest animated film of all time. Richard Williams spent 20 years of his life making this masterpiece and it shows. It has ridiculous animation (its honestly some of the best I've ever seen), gorgeous scenery, wonderful style and on top of that its also really funny. The only downsides is that its not finished and some of the voice acting is pretty spotty.

I'd give this a much higher ranking if the film was listed under "The Thief and the Cobbler", but seeing as this is the awful redone version with unnecessary vocals and silly musical numbers, it's a piece of dung. Now, if we're talking TATC here, it's an absolute masterpiece worthy of a 90, and I'd love to see it properly released someday.

(Recobbled version): The animation is breathtaking, the characters are brilliant, the voice acting is good, the plot mostly sucks, the editing is (understandably) a bit off; all in all, it's excellent, but, of course, not as excellent as it could, should and would have been. Man, fuck Disney.
