Dreadful crypto-imperialist Hollywood drivel.

This movie is very well directed and Affleck deserves a lot of credit for his ever-improving directorial work. The opening scenes are very well done and the look of the whole movie really captures the 70s. Despite being a really cool chunk of history it doesn't quite sustain a full-length movie and Affleck goes a little far to stretch the tension at the end. Really enjoyable and has piqued my interest enough to do some follow-up research.

While it told a good story two hours was just too long.

On paper there really isn't anything wrong with this. Good cast, good cinematography, great soundtrack, but it just doesn't mix as well as it should. John Goodman and Alan Arkin carry the first half of the movie with their shenanigans (although the Argo fuck yourself joke gets too much), but the movie quickly shifts and becomes serious and very rushed. They try to cram as much suspense into as little space as possible and it just feels rushed. Not bad, but it could have been done better.

A CIA movie without ridiculous spy-movie tropes and over-the-top special effects. Full of heart, humor, and knot-in-your-stomach suspense with a perfect cast (yes, even Mr. Affleck himself). Still holds up after multiple viewings several years later.

With a first act that juxtaposes the political tensions of late 70's Iran with the farcical plot to remove six hostages who escaped the American embassy when invaded by the Tehran public, this film manages to stay above the level of dull political thriller - and though the second half is largely by-the-books in terms of how it generates suspense, the film is successful, and driven along by a minimalist performance from Affleck and a good supporting cast, especially Arkin and Goodman.

Great, but a little cheesy at the end

Boring and highly predictable plot. The suspense felt forced and didn't accomplish much. There was no investment in the characters beyond the basic human qualities. Overall good acting and some subtle propaganda.

Basically it's an Aaron Sorkin zombie movie (the zombies are Persians because of course).

Rewatch-value is low (one time is worth) and so unmemorable, normal thriller and so hyped movie.

Entertaining enough. A bit too Hollywood perhaps. It was reasonably fair in presenting why the Iranians were upset with the Americans, but I don't know that I buy the presentation of the stranded Americans from the embassy as wholly innocent bystanders.

Great tale, well put together, nothing special and that white washing but still a good time.

A great movie- Ill give it that, but I just felt a little bored watching it because they essentially fleshed out the whole plan for the film in the first 20 minutes. And the execution isnt anything outlandish, so while it is great, it basically promised me a B, but ambiguously so that I was hoping for an A, and was dissapointed when I got a B.

There is uneven, then there is this, two hours of things that seem to belong in a movie all jumbled together with no regard for tonal coherence. There are ten minutes toward the end that are relatively suspenseful, though.

The climax upset me and the score disappointed me, but, aside from that, I really liked Argo. It's well directed, acted and written and it's brilliantly suspenseful. Plus, it's based on a true story.

Vivid, unbearably tense, impeccably performed. One of the few recent deserving Best Picture honorees, and proof positive that Affleck's rightful place is behind the camera.

It's a fun movie and especially the third act is really intense. I love the storytelling and writing, and it all feels very cohesive. On the other hand, I feel like the first two acts were slow and I was just waiting for the mission to happen.

Despite its flaws, "Argo" is an entertaining and thrilling film that manages to spin multiple narratives into one cohesive story. The combination of genres and tones may not work for everyone, but it's a testament to Ben Affleck's talent as a writer, actor, and director that he was able to pull it off.

Ben Affleck proves himself to be a competent director, and I think the Academy totally snubbed him. Admittedly, the climax relies heavily on such blatant textbook examples of tension building that it becomes almost ridiculous at times, but somehow that reads more like an oddly endearing feature than bad film-making. I really enjoyed it as a movie-going experience. (3.5/5)

I don't really like Ben Affleck personally as an actor and this movie makes not much difference in terms of roleplay. From director's side although, he gained more of my respect, because movie itself is pretty good, short enough to fit the story in, long enough to not become a parody of serious action which Argo definitely was.
