Summary: Michael Palin has taken on the task of duplicating Phileas Fogg's feat by attempting to circumnavigate the globe, beginning and ending at the Reform Club in London, in eighty days, using no air travel. He meets Python fans in Greece, eats snake in China, and generally goes from one adventure to another, all the while fighting to make his deadline. (imdb)

They're basically redoing this show, but with some twat Ricky Gervais picked up instead. Either way this one should not be forgotten anytime soon, unlike the one with Eric Idle.

Spending time with the amiable and earnest Palin is a joy. His light touch and humour stand in stark contrast to other blunderingly intrusive travel documentaries. There is a definite sense of adventure here, but also captured and rendered interesting is the tedium and frustration of a true journey.

Dunno why it's here (probably 'cos it's on DVD I guess), but these are all damn fine (despite Palin not being first choice)

I must say I'm not much used to documentaries being funny. I'm also not used to ones with such a sense of adventure. It's even thoughtful from time to time, which I'm not at all used to getting from movies *or* television. Python solo efforts are usually about one-sixth as funny as an average episode of MP's FC, but this is well above par. Besides showing considerable taste, manners, and education, Palin has this sly sense of humor that has a way of sneaking up on you. Edifying and very pleasant

I'm only going to comment upon the first of Michael Palin's adventures around the world as they are all equally interesting and educational. Although Palin might not have been first up for the part, I really can't imagine anyone better suited to host a series such as this. They aren't strictly films, but deserve to be ranked highly on watchability alone.

I'm rating the BBC series with Michael Palin, not the mini-series with Pierce Brosnan and Eric Idle from the same year (these two shows are mixed up into one here on Criticker).

There's just no way anyone can possibly dislike the first of many great journeys Michael did over the years. The dhow (boat) trip across the Arabian Sea is probably one of the best travel-related episodes ever - and seeing Dubai as a fisherman's town is just hilarious. BBC's fourth choice to present the series and narrate it, Ex-Python Michael Palin, did an incredible job and keeps you glued to the television while exploring new countries and cultures. A unforgettable and wonderful journey!
