Summary: Tharashankar (K.P. Ummar) & his nephew Tharadas (Mammootty), gold smugglers, runs a racket with the support of the local fishers. Cops Rajesh (Captain Raju) & Prasad (Mohanlal) are after them. During an encounter, Tharashankar is killed by Rajesh, & in revenge, Tharashankar's son Chandru (Ravindran) & Chandru's chum Charlie (Lalu Alex) kills Rajesh. Mistaking Tharadas to be the reason for Rajesh's death, Rajesh's widow (& Tharadas's ex-lover) Thulasi (Seema) & Prasad vows to bring Tharadas down. (by iceblox)

'Athirathram' is I. V. Sasi's typical cop/crime/societal drama, and although it was a big hit at the time of release, is a bit dated by today's standards. Mammootty's character, the smuggler 'Tharadas' became an iconic character the viewers would remember even years later, the fact I. V. Sasi tried to capitalize in 2006's 'Balram vs. Tharadas', although that effort fell flat on its face.
