Strong, well-paced drama which gives a seemingly uneven and arbitrary insight into moments of the life of a troubled young man. I must say, the acting is superb and the script very impressive even if there's not a lot of dialogue. In the end we don't get a full resolution or happy ending, but the not one moment of the film feels out of place - it doesn't put a foot wrong. An impressive slice of realism which recalls the Dardennes or Ken Loach.

This has something of the feel of the Dardennes brothers with its naturalistic performances and the detailed depiction of the rituals of work, but is somehow not as engaging. Perhaps Schubert's portrayal of the guarded boy left very little to engage with. Nice photography though.

It might be more straightforward and self-explanatory than it should, but the debut by Karl Markovics successfully frames the life of a man that has never lived outside orphanages and prisons.

"Can a film be faulted for being too sympathetic toward its characters, for limning a milieu with extraneous humanism?" - Joseph Jon Lanthier

nisan 12, ist film fest & Atmen, bir insanın benliğini arayışına, kendini tamamlama, geçmişine sahip çıkma isteğine dair iyi anlatılmış bir film. Atmen'in en büyük artısı, başrolündeki karakteri oynayan genç oyuncu Thomas Schubert. Atmen'de karakterin nefessiz kalışını, sıkışıklığını, boğulmasını hissedebiliyorsunuz. atmosferi iyi oluşturulmuş

Markovics, in an impressively assured directorial debut, frames the scenes so elegantly, mirroring the character's internal struggle as he grapples with a troubled past and a confusing present with death playing a prominent part in both. Schubert is equally up to the task with his quietly moving performance. The hyperventilating moments and the short but poignantly sweet encounter with an American girl are standout scenes.
