Summary: Karim (Mohammad Amir Naji), fired from his job as an ostrich farmer, ventures off to Tehran to earn some money and find means to upgrade a broken hearing aid desperately needed by one of his daughters. Characterization is the main motivation here, as the director lovingly sculpts Karim as a paternal character untarnished by any sort of negative, earthly influences. Not that he is uninspired by desire, but his desire is more directed to more altruistic means towards his family. (imdb)

Affecting, frequently amusing and nicely photographed tale of the struggles of a husband and father in rural Iran, that evinces fascination with and care for the diversity of terrestrial life and the beauty of the surrounding world. Some moments are perhaps overly-sentimental, but there is something gently captivating about the movie that makes it seem more than the sum of its parts. Possibly deserves an even higher score.

An ostrich rancher loses his job and his daughter needs a new hearing aid. To raises the funds needed, he finds success as a motorcycle cabbie in Tehran, but the sudden influx of money begins to alter his personality. This is a beautiful and subtle work about greed and purity, with lovely uses of symbolism, some charming moments and nice bits of light comedy. Majidi seems to be a fine craftsman, similar to Makhmalbaf. A memorable fable/character study, and a revealing peek into Iranian culture.

Majidi, a card-carrying animist, proves again his attentiveness to, aliveness to, the surrounding world. The opening shots of domestic ostriches from the neck up, the pursuit of an escaped ostrich by ten men on foot, a solitary pursuer patrolling the hills in a homemade costume as an ostrich decoy -- all of that, besides being fresh material on screen, presents evidence aplenty.

"Majid Majidi's lyrical, gently comic The Song of Sparrows grounds its low-key humor in the realities of poor, semi-rural Iranian life." - Andrew Schenker
