Summary: The Duplass Brothers explore the minutiae of relationship dynamics in this in-depth study of a group of desperate actor friends. And a bag. And a head.
"For all the use of first takes and jerky camera moves, the John Cassavetes invoked by Baghead is not the indie pioneer saint but his Faustian thespian-husband character in Rosemary's Baby." - Bill Weber
"A sly poke at indie filmmaking, a non-stop roller-coaster of sexual and romantic politics, and (yes) a slightly scary thriller when all is said and done."
Mumblecore meets Blair Witch... and it's pretty damned entertaining. I think I give mumblecore movies something of a free pass, considering the majority of people hate on the pseudo-genre. Oh well, I liked it.
Not as good as The Puffy Chair but by no means a bad film. Mark Duplass really needs to invest in a tripod, it was almost like he was saying WE ARE LOW BUDGET, GET IT? This movie could've been a lot better but it was an enjoyable 80 minutes. Greta Gerwig is sexy.
Kinda forgettable, but admirable attempt at "something"...I'm just not sure exactly what their ultimate aim was. It started off promisingly enough with a cute bit about trying to sneak into an after-party and the early explorations of the relationships shared by the characters. But at some point, it ran off the rails and people stopped acting like real people and started acting like characters in a movie, which is never a good thing in these types of low-budget flicks.
severely realistic feel between the handheld camera and the startlingly true-to-life script. i loved the vagueness of the genre as well, this is a fantastically unique film.
Fresh evidence that simpler is often better in horror films. The thoroughly clever script effectively plays with its premise as the characters try to determine if this scary figure is real or imagined, while also taking advantage of the ease of impersonating him to play pranks on one another. their jolts. The final twist is fairly easy to predict, even if it is executed with reasonable effectiveness. More than anything else, it's the playfulness of the movie that sticks.
A somewhat enjoyable union of mumblecore and horror with a "movies about making movies" gloss to it. You'll be able to see the ending a mile away if you've ever seen a movie before and I'm not crazy about it getting all "Blair Witch" in the final act, but the four characters are solid enough that the journey there is amusing. Also, I have a crush on Greta Gerwig.
