Balance (1989)

Summary: The setting is on a floating platform where a group of evenly and carefully placed men live. Each man is aware that the platform is not stable and in order not to fall to their deaths, they maintain a careful balance of weight to prevent the platform from tipping too far and cause them all to fall. This reasonably harmonious understanding is lost when one man pulls up a heavy trunk. In the ensuing struggle, balance is lost in more than one sense. (imdb)

A animated (clay puppets) silent film that teaches an engaging moral lesson. Great for students (upper elementary and up).

The Lauensteins' simple-in-design allegory provides a damning indictment to the farcical power struggles that have occurred throughout the existence of humanity, be they exterior or in then-divided Germany. In Balance, several numbered characters work together so that each may get a virtual bite of a cherry (here represented by a heavy trunk) until a single member's covetousness ensures the tipping of the titular factor. A silly, selfish call captured with unpretentious yet crystalline fashion.

"Balance" is a bit bizarre in the beginning but you get used to it easily. It talks about the impact of something unknown in a balanced life. Moreover, it shows the greed of some people to acquire something, often by eliminating each other. This, of course, leads to a dead end in realationships & life. The main disadvantage of the film, though, is that it repeats itself constantly for about 2 minutes in the middle. And 2 minutes is too much in short films. Well, it appears that nobody's perfect.

Witty picture, take 5 people who depend on each other, add a scarce and seemingly precious resource, sit back and observe... Maybe trite for some, but this is an allegory that should be pushed until it becomes cliche.

this thing is less than ten minutes long, but i was bored after two, i should also mention i've never had much of a heart for animated shorts outside of kids cartoons.

Delightfully strange, interesting animation which is a surprisingly good mental image of game theory and Nash equilibrium, specifically. There is constant action, a cool, eerie setting, and an appropriate ending. Definitely one of the better shorts I have seen.

A little heavy-handed, and it takes too long to get to where it seems to be going. That said, it's certainly an interesting visual style and it seems to fit the mood of the piece (even if, inevitably, it isn't to everyone's taste).

Simple, spooky, effective. The ending wasn't so great though. Why couldn't he just jump in place once to send the box sliding toward him, then meet in in the middle, rebalanced?
