'Balettan' came as a fresh breeze in Mohanlal's career, when things were getting stale for him after playing a lot of over-the-top characters in a row, and the audience have had just about enough. The tearjerker melodrama taps into the Keralites' weakness for family-oriented stories and ended up being a big hit. However though, if you look hard enough, 'Balettan' is stale bread. The character of the all-suffering eldest brother of the family was done better than this by Mammootty in 'Vatsalyam'.
