"Consists largely of nasty knocks against the fat, old, and Asian, all of whom are framed in cramped compositions that suggest the influence of Simpsons animation cells and Ulrich Seidl." - Ed Gonzalez

I had the idea I had already seen most of this in other films. It's just a compilation of other teen movies, in a bad package with bad acting and some retarded characters.

Some very competent directing. The script could have been jokier, but most of the laughs that are written in are done pretty well. Gets pretty heavy-handed by the end. The super old and Jewish Florida was a great backdrop for this coming of age story. Also great to see Brandon Hardesty getting work. (Oh, and look for the boom operator in the Bar Mitzvah closing scene. He's RIGHT THERE for a shot.)

not sure what that movie wants to be, for sure no american pie, no royal tannenbaums style either and no own style too, there is just something missing there

Pretty bland. Had a few funny moments, the ending was probably the highlight of the movie.

A fun little indie romp that featured cut out characters on a brand new stage. I liked the location of the movie, out of the way Florida probably couldn't possibly feel as fresh in person. It was nice to see Shawkat outside of Arrested Development, she played subdued and hurt quite well, although I missed the incredibly witty delivery that she perfected for Maeby. The film had a warm finish that peaked just above my tolerance for sap, and clashed with the over the top humor of its midsection.

A few funny scenes (one in particular with Macy is side-splitting), but mostly falls flat.

I'm not really sure what to say about this movie. There was nothing really horrible about it but nothing great either. It was pretty tame, the jokes were subpar and the plot was straightforward. There wasn't a lot of discussion about coming of age as I thought there'd be. And the setting of the movie in Florida bothered me, somehow. Everything about this movie was just "blah". Overall, it wasn't horrible but it could've been WAAAY better.

An extremely typical teen film (frankly, if I never see another onscreen prom again, that'll be just fine with me), but a lot of it is salvaged on the comedically robust shoulders of William H. Macy.
