Summary: In yet another film patterned on _The Seven Samurai_, a band of diverse heroes in outer space are assembled to defend a planet of peaceful colonists from an armada of aggressors. If the special effects look familiar, it is because you've the same space sequences recycled in other low budget SF films. (imdb)

This above-average Roger Corman production is lots of fun. The decent low-budget FX were reused by the ever-frugal Corman in later productions like _Galaxy of Terror_, _Forbidden World_, and _Android_.

This movie is probably the book on "rip-off". It does not only copy ideas from great sci-fi movies and turns them into simplified, bland nonsense, but it also recycles sound effects from Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica. It's just laughable. I'm not even going to comment on the soundtrack. It's James Horner alright, no chance of missing that. :-) And what's with that ship that has boobs on it? Who designed this thing anyway?

Has all the visual charm that makes a fun sci-fi movie except for reasonable filmmaking and likeable actors.

John Dykstra from star wars was approached to do the special effects for this and said it'd cost 2 million dollars! Roger Corman then BUILT a studio for half that, reused the special effects in dozens of other films AND leased the studio to John Carpenter for escape from New york! Genius! oh and the film's okay too

It had an ok idea, and they tried pretty hard, but ultimately the characters lack nuance and the acting was pretty poor. Its only rated so high because I love sci-fi cheese.

The hero spends much of the film quoting alien hippie-scripture to weasel his way out of having to do anything heroic. The love interest's father is creepily eager to pair his daughter off with the first handsome stranger he sees. The spaceship effects are pretty good, actually. The interiors and especially the Akir planet sets look a good twenty years out of date, not surprising considering it's a Roger Corman production. Nice music, though.
