Summary: Having forged a 20-year run as one of the most innovative and influential hip hop bands of all time, the Queens NY collective known as 'A Tribe Called Quest' have kept a generation hungry for more of their groundbreaking music since their much publicized breakup in 1998. Michael Rapaport documents the inner workings and behind the scenes drama that follows the band to this day. He explores what's next for, what many claim, are the pioneers of alternative rap. (imdb)

I wasn't very familiar with many of their songs (but I do like old school Hip Hop). It's interesting, but based mostly on hearsay than facts. It is nice to have a film about musicians that doesn't revolve around the, 'Start the band, hit it big, do a bunch of drugs, break up due to drugs, maybe get back together' motif.

If you're already a fan of the band this gives some interesting insights into the behind-the-scenes of it all but as a documentary it's not without it's faults. You can tell a lot of the story of the band's history fell by the wayside as some of the drama of the reunion started unfold. Because of that there isn't much other than the opinions of a few modern hip-hop artists to truly hype up how big and amazing the group really was in their prime.

I can't shake the feeling that I've seen this story before somewhere. However, I really admire the effort put forth to give historical context to an amazingly talented group.

This will sound harsh but it seemed half of the doc was devoted to the 'feud' and Phife's diabetes, which wasn't interesting. If that had been minimized and replaced with material from Tribe's height this would score at least an extra ten points.

Tribe's music takes a backseat to power struggle and personality conflict.

I was feelin' the documentary but don't feel like it went into as much detail as it could have. Good as a Tribe primer, of sorts, and even though I'm white as snow (unless it's been pissed on...), I'm always fascinated with hip hop and hip hop culture, so I was interested. As someone else said, all it really has is some modern hip-hop artists to hype them up, but that's interesting and good enough. Could have been a 90 or so though.

Tribe changed my life and maybe that's why I loved the fuck out of this, but I think it is one of the strongest music documentaries I've seen...I was so afraid Rapaport would bog it down with the Q-Tip vs Phife feud but it totally works.

A bit inaccessible as far as the music is concerned, and the drama element just comes across as a he-said/she-said soap opera.

Fans of ATCQ will get a lot out of this documentary. Lived up to the hype.
