Summary: With her entertaining documentary, Anat Baron ushers viewers into the backrooms and breweries of the ultracompetitive beer industry and reveals what it takes for independent brewers to compete with the corporate giants who dominate the business. With a background that includes a successful career as a Hollywood producer and a stint as the general manager of Mike's Hard Lemonade Co., Baron is uniquely suited to tackle this subject matter. (Netflix)
A light-hearted and honest look at what it takes to be in the business of brewing and selling beer in this day and age. With Miller and Coors joining forces to take on the behemoth that is Anheuser Busch, all of the little guys are getting crushed in the rubble or are being bought out only to be mass produced and watered down (I'm looking at you Rolling Rock!). Definitely makes you want to cheer for the little guys (and not just in the world of beer).
Interesting enough the best part is the veteran beer drinkers who swear by a big brand not being able to taste test their own favored beer. Water is water.
Anat Baron is following a little too closely to Michael Moore's shadow in her style, but thankfully the content is there and it's good. I would have liked a little more attention to small brewers, but that would have come at the expense at revealing dubious actions taken by the big brewers, and that was by far the most interesting part of the doc. My biggest take away is that Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione is the coolest man in beer.
