These characters each begin their reunion by employing pretense and sarcasm to shield their tender emotions, but eventually drop their respective veneers of nonchalance to jointly acknowledge the painful passion of their past. This, coupled with characters traits driven by the emotional events of Before Sunrise, leads to a nuanced exploration of love and maturation. It doesn't have the youthful exhubarence of the first film, but finds a unique depth that is all its own.
I don't consider myself a romantic (at all!), but for some reason I found myself drawn in to these characters and their journey together. Maybe the honesty of their interaction is what captured my interest, or maybe it was something else that I can't pinpoint; all I know is that I felt invested in their blossoming relationship.
Its the perfect partner to the first. Both equally great but I just loved how much more mature and developed the characters were now. Its a film that runs completely off its screenplay and it works as well as it did in the first. Delpy and Hawke's charisma and chemistry are as strong as ever which only heightens this romance story as one of the greats.
The script is one of the best of all-time in my opinion, the dialogue sounds so real and the incredibly real and natural performances by Delpy and Hawke make it even more perfect. A lovely companion for Before Sunrise. Certainly, along with "Sunrise", one of the best romances Hollywood has to offer.
A stunning moment and the moment which summarises quite what Before Sunset is about is when Jesse is talking about his marriage in the car and Celine moves her hand towards him wanting to comfort him. She pulls her hand away before touching him though and he doesn't even see her do any of this. It is a small detail but an incredibly beautiful and touching one as two characters are trying to reach out to each other but can't in this moving film about aging, regret and the transience of time.
This movie keeps you engaged all through out. The script is excellent and the presentation is very natural. This movie has much more mature touch to it as compared to Before Sunrise. The characters have grown and matured in the movie. A must see romantic drama.
