Summary: Craig, a puppeteer, takes a filing job in a low-ceilinged office in Manhattan. Although married to the slightly askew Lotte, he hits on a colleague, the sexually frank Maxine. She's bored but snaps awake when he finds a portal leading inside John Malkovich: for 15 minutes you see, hear, and feel whatever JM is doing, then you fall out by the New Jersey Turnpike... (imdb)
This is probably the most hilarious absurdist comedy of the 90s. Every scene reaches a new level of ridiculousness. Philosophically, I don't think it's as interesting as Kaufman's other films, so I tend to ignore the attempts at depth and just look at it as a screwball comedy with extra screw, at which it is excellent. The casting is also amazing.
One of the weirdest movies I have ever seen in my life-- and one I love to re-watch. The fact that even CAMERON DIAZ does a good job in this movie speaks to its quality, because she's terrible in everything. I love the acting and the story and the writing, all of it here adds to this surreal environment.
Fantastic writing and direction, especially considering that this was both Kaufman and Jonez' feature film debut. The acting was strong, surprisingly so in Cameron Diaz's case, but I'm not a huge fan of John Cusack or his performance here. Still, all around, a great movie.
For a movie that was very much about being drawn into other existences and indeed changing identities to get what you want, I found it a bit bogus that the movie itself got way too lost in its own gimmick at times. It's original, and wacky, and has some wit... but all in all you can dress up in whatever costume you like, if you're empty inside you're still going to be empty inside. Pretty much sums this movie's worth up.
