In the dark silence of the sea during World War II, the submarine U.S.S. Tiger Shark prowls on what should be a routine rescue mission. But for the shell-shocked crew, trapped together in the sub's narrow corridors and constricted spaces, this is about to become a journey into the sensory delusions, mental deceptions and runaway fear that lurk just below the surface of the ocean and deep inside the human psyche. Decent enough but there's next to no scares, the plot is stupid and everything takes too long to happen so by the time something actually DOES happen there's only about ten minutes left of the film (that actually count at least).

Ambitious little horror flick. Finds a way to work in clichéd horror film tricks by weaving it in with the claustrophobic atmosphere of the sub. Cast is likable and hard working.

The all-time b-movie cast. Everyone is someone you'll recognize but might not be able to name. Decent movie scripted by Aronofsky who is a modern man of wonder.

Pretty decent ghosts on a sub flick. Very much a slow burner as the thrills and chills are pretty random (pull curtain back, nothing there, random voice, things like that). More of a mystery/ghost story than a horror flick where most of the tension is brought on by being in a sub during WWII. Think of it as "The Others" underwater.

A film about a haunted submarine during WWII. Not as good as it sounds, but it was fun. Marred by tons of crude & lewd dialogue, however. (I was in the Navy and it wasn't half that bad.) Some unrealistic scenes (firing away in a sub (hello, ricochets?) and no, you cannot hear whale sounds); not to mention a far-fetched plot. But, hey, it's a movie. The way they treated the German sailor was ridiculous. I will say it was Impressive how well they recreated the look & feel of an old WWII boat.

From the director of the Pitch Black series I was expecting more horror and good sci-fi effects, but this film is rather lacking of both. It is at least well made and should keep your interest the whole way through. Greenwood is good in the lead role and some of the other actors are also good, but there were a few poorly played roles that kinda ruined things for me.

I rather liked it. A tight, claustrophobic little surprise of a movie.

Pretty cool, actually. Bends traditional sub movie conventions.

Despite its amusements -- this is a classic ghost story filled with a Carpenter-esque depiction of human downfall --, Below hasn't aged pretty well, perhaps because its aims are so subtle -- a Nazi ghost that haunts but rarely shows its face before an American crew and a couple of brit survivors near the bottom of the ocean -- that it required a better director to make it work.

If you are looking for some different Horror film because of the submarine, look for it somewhere else.

I have a soft spot for submarine movies so probably scored this higher than it deserves. Still, it's a tense and well-made thriller with some spooky elements thrown in. You'll forget everything about it 10 minutes after it ends but it entertains while it lasts.

The true title should be "The Haunted Submarine." Ridiculous tripe with sub-par acting and terribly unremarkable directing.

Good idea with mediocre execution. Build up leaves little payoff.

7- recommended, good :: I thought the atmosphere was great. The depth charge scene had a really great (and original) moment. There was a scene with a mirror that was great. And the speculation from "Weird Wally" about the cause of the malediction was better than great. ...but I think that most of the rest of the movie was just good.

Hard to believe Aronofsky had a part in writing this.. lol @ Galifianakis trying to act in anything other than a comedy too

Decently suspenseful. Gets by fine without the use of a lot of big scares.

It's not half bad, could have had a complete plot overhaul and the ending was better left clipped, but it pulled out a couple supernatural elements here and there that, had they been nurtured would have made a real winner.

This film shouldn't be so widely described as sci-fi, considering how much work they put into ambiguity, and how the medium of film makes that impossible. It's a decent film, though slowly paced, but with so many intense sub thrillers in existence already it's hard to be impressed. The editing seems slightly off, including shots that appear purposeless beyond being artful, and parts that desperately need clarity done in montage instead. The good cast and premise were done few favors.

Without the supernatural bunkum, this would be a decent film about the claustrophobia and paranoia that could run rife in such an extreme environment. But the ghost stuff becomes too overt towards the end and it just ends up becoming a string of horror clichés. The directing is horrible, too - real straight-to-DVD stuff, particularly the cheapo exterior shots of the submarine - and the acting is patchy at best.

What happens when you pair clever genre workman David Twohy with inventive auteur Darren Aronofsky is an imaginatively high-concept little piece of what-you-don't-see horror cinema, supported by some spare but striking effects, nerve-rending deep-sea claustrophobia and super performances by a host of choice character actors.
