Summary: Sympathetic look loosely based on the relationship between tobacco heiress, Doris Duke (1912-1993) - think Duke University - and her shy butler, Bernard Lafferty... (imdb)
Good. This film is basically a Ralph Fiennes showcase. I've been a great fan ever since The English Patient and this man just doesn't let up. Be it a lover or a gay English butler, he just slips in to the role..becomes it. The story may not be much but its interesting enough to be a must-see for all of Mr Fiennes' fans. Recommended.
You will not see two better performances this year than those of Susan Sarandon and Ralph Fiennes in this film. They inhabit their roles - great craft, yes, but great art as well. This is a most unusual love story, and one that is well worth watching.
High production values. Both Sarandon and Fiennes played each role well. However the characters were not written to be very compelling. Story doesn't really know where it is going or what it wants to say. Are we to feel sorry for the empty lives of the wealthy and frivolous and their sycophantic and possibly exploitive retainers?
