The quiet and poetic quality of this coming of age story enables it to rise above the overdone elements of the genre. Each of the three leads turns in a solid performance. The themes of losing innocence and unforgiveness loom large in the film, and the filmmakers take great pains to show the painful scars that result. Growing up in the world of this film is a scary proposition. Real loss occurs, and the benefit is unclear.

Visually accomplished and the soundtrack is mesmerizing yet the film comes off as only sporadically engaging. One of those films à la "The Return" that abandon story for style and symbolism. Few directors (Kusturica, Lynch) succeed in telling a great story at the same time. Not my cup of tea.
