While the premise being interesting, the film itself fails overall in its execution. It all felt a bit rushed, especially the second half. A good try, just could have been a lot better.

Attempts without complete success to convey the irrationality and fear that must have gripped the age. The dialogue was a little too anachronistic, and the shaky camerawork and artificial colour filtering were unnecessary annoyances. Amusingly attempts to show that violence and madness were the norm on all sides, but the narrative had a strangely clunky quality about it, so that overall the movie fails to convey a sense of verisimilitude.

Not entirely coherent, but not meant to be, this historically inspired horror film does justice to the genre but is let down by a lack of compelling characters and generally poor acting.

It is extremely dark and morbid, but no other tone would do the subject matter justice. Though the story isn't really anything special, the movie does an excellent job showing the root of fanaticism and the terrible cost of fear.

It was like a hour and a half episode of game of thrones, but then a bad one, where nothing much happens and with a lot of bad acting. They could have atleast put some cool stuff in the script like dragons or wizards or somethng but noooo, it was only bout black death...plague... in a village... and people walking... wait.. that was the entire movie? Yawn.

Grim and bloody tale of plagues and witchcraft set in 1348 England. Sean Bean is typically solemn and severe as the Christian soldier leading a group of mercenaries on a quest to capture an alleged necromancer. Pretty authentic to the Medieval period, everyone and everything is absolutely filthy, and the corpses get stacked up pretty high by the end. The brief epilogue is the nasty little cherry on top of this bleak concoction.

One of the most engrossing recreations of medieval europe I've ever seen. Excellent acting and a thought provoking story about the role of religion in people's lives. Great pacing and a strong ending. Sean Bean is excellent, as usual. Note: this is not a horror film, it is a drama.

I liked the idea of one man crusade amongst the Black Death. A bit like Darth Vader character. There was also interesting lining between fantasy and reality. Unfortunately the director did not get anything nice out of the premises. The haze village in the end was also a big letdown.

Guess what? S.Bean's character dies at some point (as expected thus this isn't spoiler, is it?). Not really bad but not great either. Guy who had camera was probably drunk since there are many shaky scenes whose don't have real sense/effect on ambient. Still worth a watch if there's nothing better.

Certainly an odd time-period choice for a horror film but oddly enough Christopher Smith manages to deliver an entertaining film. Though horror isn't my genre of preference the film's lead, Sean Bean, really does have a captivating role. The sheer tenacity of the of the religious devotion of him and (most) of his men really makes the film better than the average horror flick. Worth a watch.

Surprisingly effective. Heavily influenced by decades of (especially British) Horror, the most obvious points of reference being Witchfinder General and The Wicker Man. Shame about the shaky cam in the film's action sequences but fortunately these are few and far between.

Woefully flat characters in the drab Earthtoned medieval setting that has become so beloved to low budget directors. For a movie tackling period horror, it lacks the grit or esoteric charm needed to be memorable (see Ravenous for how to do period horror right). Cumbersome anachronistic dialogue, pale boring characters and the inability to get the plot rolling within the first hour make this one to skip.

This film is claustrophobic and shakes its cameras mercilessly, but it is commendably vicious and unforgiving. I will admit to being more intrigued by the prologue than the film itself, but I can see how it would have been difficult to form a narrative arc around a merciless witch hunter, whereas this film's unfolding progresses nicely. I also enjoyed Bean's tired conviction, his subdued presentation was more nuanced than the fervour I expected.

I was thoroughly enjoying the first half, but I have a soft spot for this type of gritty medieval misery so I am a bit biased. Turns into a more run-of-the-mill Wicker Man-y thriller, which took some wind out of its sails. The dark ending left me with a wicked grin again. Cool cast, and it was a nice surprise to see some of mah fellow Dutchies pop up.
