Has a comedic edge to it that didn't really work for me, neither funny enough to make the film that much more enjoyable yet at the same time its presence takes away from the dramatic impact of the film. Other than that it is a very finely made love triangle story and despite the comedic edge detracting from the dramatic impact there is still quite a bit of impact left, in particular the ending.

Nakadai makes such a great bad guy.

It's a very sober film, very frank about its social themes, putting it ahead of its time even by international standards. You can already tell the quality of the fledgling Masaki Kobayashi, who went on to make so much great cinema. I do feel that it kind of wanes and gets tedious by some point.
