There's not much to say about a 30-second movie about such a mundane activity. The best part is reflecting that this is a piece of time preserved for the ages by a then-revolutionary technology, and that most films this old -- indeed, 90% of all silent movies ever made -- have gone right into the ashcan, and will never be witnessed ever again

This is the first film to slightly rule in some way. Three dudes wail on shit with hammers, take shots of booze, and then wail on shit with hammers some more. If that isn't bad ass, I don't know what is.

It's meaningless to rate this against anything after like 1903, but I gotsta keep that National Film Registry collection updated.

It is a staged scene, so it hasn't the ethnographic value that later actualities had. It has no imagination, so it's not as entertaining as later trick films. The only reason to rate this higher the "0" is film history value. So I'll give it a 20.

I was moved to tears. The entire film is a metaphor for our daily lives; the struggle against the bourgeoisie; the small hurdles we must overcome during our daily lives. The subplot of the disloyal partner, I thought, was well done and subtle. Each one of the actors does an unbelievably excellent portrayal of their respective characters. They emote so wonderfully that you can't help but feel you truly are experiencing the best that film has to offer.

Although its running time is 39 seconds, this is somehow very interesting. I don't know. When watching it, I could feel that this was one of the very first movies ever created. A film that made everything that would follow possible. It's good.
