When I was a kid I thought this was great. However, when you are 13, you don't quite perceive that this is a large but rather silly action movie that doesn't ultimately make a hell of a lot of sense

Terrific sci-fi/action movie for fourteen-year-old boys of all ages. Far from believable and McDowell cuts the ham thick in the first of a decade's worth of campy bad guy performances but with breathtaking stunts and solid performances by Scheider, Stern as his earnest young partner, and Clark as Roy's nutty girlfriend who apparently went to the Hal Needham school of defensive driving.

Roy Scheider flips a fucking helicopter, kills Alex DeLarge, parks Blue Thunder in front of a train, and walks away like a total badass as the train destroys it.

A pretty mediocre film to be honest. Sure it's centred around a cool helicopter but that's really all it has going for it. On a side note the collateral damage is pretty hilarious. Thinking about how probably a few hundred innocent civilians were killed during the climax and no one seems to care once it starts, least of all the hero of the film, is pretty funny.

This movie is really just a fantasy concocted by a script writer who used to write Technical Manuals for USAF crew chiefs. What if helicopters were the future? And then the jizz hits the pants.

OK, so I watched this when I was a kid and it may well be a rubbish film but seeing as I'll probably never go back and watch it again I'm not going to reassess this rating. As I look through my rose-tinted specs this will always be the bestest helicopter movie ever and I refuse to change my mind. This is my completely arbitrary rating and there's nothing you can do about it.

It has been a good 12 years or so since I first watched this film and ever since then I've wanted the watch that Roy has. I love this film, and I always will. The soundtrack is perfect, and the helicopter is amazing. I don't care if it looks ridiculous, it's amazing because I said so. I bought it on DVD, and it has aged well, it's still a great film.
