Atmospheric period noir with Carradine doing a fantastic job. Ulmer crafts some wonderfully off-kilter sequences and areas rich with deep shadows. The story is tight but not rushed, and the piece as a whole has a creepy mood to it, with a compelling central character. However, the score is layered over single second of the film. It's far too distracting and overwhelming. Otherwise it's a good film, but once you realize the music is continually going it's hard not to keep thinking about it.

Carradine carries the day. A tight thriller aided by cult auteur Ulmer's atmospheric direction.

Unexceptional in just about every way. I hope they paid the composer by the note because his damn score wailed inappropriately through every scene.

Carradine is very creepy here. This is a very effective horror film with a fine European flavor. Surprising what Ulmer could do on a low budget.
