Man, it would be so easy to blow 30 million bucks today. This flick is shameless wish fulfillment coupled with dopey fun.

Very much of its era, but also very watchable and amusing.

Good concept mined for decent laughs by Pryor and Candy

I wish someone would give me a lot of money and make me spend it.

Good fun comedy caper, but not exactly the finest piece of cinema you'll ever see. Also has a horribly shmaltzy ending that takes about 10 points off for me.

A couple of funny moments here and there don't make a good film. The entire premise is just utterly ridiculous but you could let that go if it was a good laugh a minute comedy. Sadly it's not and the laughs are not nearly rapid enough to make this worthwhile.

A really neat concept that ends up being a lot of fun. I can't say I loved it, but I do wish comedies today were as creative. Although the forced romantic tension creates a little tedium, the movie keeps moving and hits all the right notes. Good family flick.

A rather silly stupid movie that's only held together by Prior's manic energy. There are some good moments, especially in the last 3rd of the movie, but much of it is still incredibly amateurish.

another one of my early teen films that i must have watched 100 times. i probably cannot give this an honest review bc of that, but i'd still watch it if i ran across it on tv. pryor had clearly lost a step by this time, but he still manages some laughs with his exasperations and john candy is always john candy

A comedy that wavers a little too much. There are some really funny lines and parts but overall it's underwhelming considering how funny both Pryor and Candy are in other movies.The concept itself is decent enough and it does keep you entertained throughout, but the ending sells out (in typical 80s comedy fashion) and at the end it just feels like it's potential was greater than the end product.

This story has been knocking around Hollywood forever. Even Fatty Arbuckle played Monte. But in this retelling, Richard Pryor gives a good, but vanilla performance as he millionaire with a secret. John Candy is great as Monte's buddy, Spike. Don't look for Pryor's patented racial humor here though. Overall a pleasant film.

I don't know why this movie works, but it does.
