I couldn't get into it. Maybe because it was too late, maybe because the film's a bit confusing, maybe because the main character reminded me too much of Harry Potter...???... But, I am impressed with the scores it's received. I'd say that merits another try. Thanks, Criticker, maybe...
Takes a good while to get into but once you are the story hots up and Brick just gets better and better. Unlike some kids-talking-like-adults examples (Dawsons Creek, Juno, etc.) the stilted speech and odd jargon feels right, fitting the contemporary teen Bogart theme perfectly and giving the viewer another reason to concentrate intently on everything that's happening. As soon as it finished I felt I needed to watch it again, which is always a positive sign.
While it's Nouveau Noir premise looked so promising- a dark and dingy world portrayed through high school aged middle america- something in Brick just didn't feel right. In places the characters took their influence too far and ended up being parodies of themselves; over acting parts that would have carried beautifully understated. A worthy watch, just a little unsatisfying.
I really wanted to like this movie, but the dialogue was spouted so fast as to be incomprehensible a lot of the time, and there's not much in the way of realism as it pertains to what are supposed to be high school students. I admire what it tries to do, but I don't feel that it's the watermark of neo-noir as many do.
I appreciate the effort of doing something different, and a film noir set in modern day high school certainly fits that bill. There is some nice dialogue here, but it's a terribly dull and plodding movie overall. What a shame...
A youthful spin on the classic noir genre, Brick is an intriguing mystery that grips you and never lets you go. It plays like a classic mystery with modern settings. It never gets ahead of itself, it keeps the events real. Brendan is an average character with average traits, who just happened to fall deeply in love and now we will stop at nothing to learn the truth. Joseph Gordon Levitt is in tune, such a wonderful performance from him. This film is genuine and fresh and full of intensity
Brick, with its stunningly dark tone and an immersive narration, is a little gem which provides that one tiny thing the biggies fail to give: An absorbing whodonnit mystery. Definitely worth renting!
