What makes Broadway Danny Rose a little different from Allen's other works is that the story within the film aspect allows everybody to be a caricature, which is kind of fun. I say kind of fun, because this is nowhere near Allen's best work. It's not even some of his better work from the decade. Let me be clear. The movie's fine, but not worth seeking out unless you're way into Woody Allen. He's made like 15 or 20 better movies.

"BDR" sets off as a collection of good-old-times incidents. Then, it veers towards light action comedy and resembles many funny action flicks of the '80s (I had the feeling that Mel Gibson would pop up any moment) but still has a Woody feel to it (and no ridiculously impossible chases).

A minor Woody Allen, but worth your time. Danny may be Woody's most endearing character.

Tier 2 Allen can still be impressive. It's no small feat 2 craft an entertaining screwball comedy that prominently features discussions about the meaning of life & the costs/rewards of being "good" w/out breaking the lightness of the narrative. It's also quite an accomplishment 2 paint characters as broadly as Allen does here - his & Farrow's characters r basically caricatures - & yet never strain the audience's credulity or emotional tether 2 either of them.

The middle section is a bit less interesting, but for the most part this was a nicely nostalgic bit of filmmaking with some gorgeous photography. Not hugely funny but very enjoyable.

There's plenty to like outside of Mia Farrow; Danny Rose is a character not completely removed from the stock Woody type, but he carries an endearing and hilarious optimism that make him stand out amongst a long series of neurotic little men. Gordon Willis is on point as usual; it's not my favorite of their collaborations but it's certainly always welcome. I think my favorite thing about this movie was the ventriloquist with the stammer. There's something rather poignant and iconic about that.

It's a matter of whether you enjoy Allen's schtick for Broadway Danny Rose. I mean, if you're tracking down all his pre-2000 films odds are you do, but otherwise that's what I'd say it comes down to. I've always found him entertaining; a bit like Robin Williams in that he's spouting off joke after joke, except he's actually endearing. This is one of the best of his I've ever seen. The brilliant humor is spaced out, but when it happens it's glorious.

Danny Rose is one of Woody Allen's best variation of the Woody Allen character archetype. It's also lightheartedly funny, and contains my favourite Allen romance.
