William Haines had the ability to play a likable scumbag, and that helps the film, but there's a limit to how much one can care about rich boy impressing other rich boys and a rich girl.

This type of plot works better as a comedy, like in The Freshman, because these Ivy League status dramas are inherently silly. That said, it's very well done and has lots of heart.
