In theory I should have loved this..."Buffalo Bill" serves as both a takedown of the "Old West" mythos and as an examination of the faux-hero phenomenon, whose fame was arrived at, not through performing heroic deeds, but through the process of lies, embellishment and myth-making. Sounds pretty good...and Altman has impressed me in the few things I've seen of his, but something didn't fully click for me. I appreciated the idea and the performances are fine, but ultimately, I was underwhelmed.

Top-notch cast and production design wasted on a grossly overlong, tedious snore-fest that arrives nowhere and accomplishes nothing. Impossible to stay awake through.

Sorry but I found it utterly boring.

Altman's passive approach to filmmaking bores more than it intrigues here, despite a great cast, their performances, and one of the more interesting deconstructions of the western genre that I've seen.

There are plenty of slow spots and many funny moments. Paul Newman is very good in the lead role. Newman has fun with his role. This is not my favourite Robert Altman film but it is certainly worth a watch.

I went into this expecting a straight Western, so I was quite pleasantly surprised. Although there is some naive cynicism, especially when it comes to the magical mythologised Injuns, I liked the commentary on American celebrity culture and the role of the actor in film. The '70s haircuts were pretty silly though!

Kind of a lost classic if you ask me, if only for Paul Newman's performance and some absolutely hysterical moments.

This is Altman's follow up to the masterpiece Nashville and it has the same finely tuned sprawl if not the resonant cynical poignancy. Every character in the bustling performers' camp hints at a fully realized drama existing just offscreen. There's some late film foolishness as Cody begins ranting about his lot in life to an imagined ghost, but generally it's the sort of controlled, overstuffed intellectual entertainment that was Altman's forte.

Great comedy and critique that may not have met the more conventional expectations of certain audiences.
