Woo's particular style of violence and heightened melodrama could easily collapse into a bad misfire, and on this viewing, this film I once liked has sadly become this. Were it not for the Vietnam War story, this would be like most of his other films and work perfectly, but in attempting to weld his style to this much more serious portrait of a real event, his melodrama becomes trite if not questionable despite his intentions.

Good ish, people getting popped. In the head. But also a very emotional movie. It's as moving as it is thrilling. But sometimes cheesy and all over the place.

John Woo's darkest and best film. Do NOT expect Chow Yun-fat or the usual romanticism here. Makes the De Palma _Scarface_ look like "The Family Circus"

A very interesting John Woo Vietnam movie. It has the usual wonderfully coreographed fight scenes Woo is famous for, combined with a tale about war and friendships. It's a bit hard to follow how some of the flashbacks fit in and the sentimentality is a little forced but most of it is quite enjoyable.

In the years between 1986 and 1992, everything John Woo touched turned to gold. This is no exception. Great story, solid acting, and top notch action.

On one hand, this is a film on the level of John Woo's masterpieces -- magnificently choreographed gun-fu bloodbath that explores how friendships form, and disintegrate, in the face of violence. Overly sentimental as well, but that's pretty standard for Woo. On the other hand, it's a messy, heavy-handed amalgam of The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now and probably two or three Vietnam movies too. Overall, not as good as The Killer or Hard Boiled, but an improvement over A Better Tomorrow.

A sentimental, banal, action-packed version of The Deer Hunter or something. Excessively unequivocal and mushy - and even the gunplay doesn't seem as playful as in, let's say, Hard Boiled. I have to admit that Woo's not the same any more...
