Excellent chase finale would make this film worthwhile by itself but it has more to recommend it... not the least being McQueen's aggressive performance as a tough, modern-day police detective. Well directed by Yates.
A brilliant (de?)construction of the "rogue cop" subgenre. Like Bullitt the character, Bullitt the film plays by its own rules, getting rid of pesky things like every-10-page action set pieces. Yes, it has action scenes - great ones - but it has them when it serves the story. One of the highest moments of tension comes when the cops stare at a 1960's "fax" machine printing a photo. Now THAT'S a police procedural.
Standard run-of-the-mill police story, with a moderately entertaining car chase scene in the middle. Many scenes are unnecessarily drawn out, there are quite a few pointless characters (Bullitt's girlfriend), and some scenes seem to serve no purpose at all, making this film much more boring than it could have been. Forgettable.
Manages to avoid the typical right-wing Manichaeist fantasizing of the "cop-playing-by-his-own-rules" subgenre. Unfortunately, it's a film undone by its own awesomeness. Nothing could top the incredible car chase in the second act, and its finale seemed anticlimactic by comparison.
One of the characters in this film accuses Bullitt of aggrandizing himself, and while his assessment of Bullitt's character is off, his statement could easily apply to McQueen's role. There are gentle elements of McQueen's character that I enjoyed, and the film had a wonderfully gritty tone. However, the pacing is abysmal, and the film feels like a calculated vehicle designed to reinforce his stardom. I wanted a film that felt more alive, and while there were flickers, nothing was fully formed.
Bad direction, bad pacing, bad dialogs. Good soundtrack and McQueen is always in shape. Actually it felt like a long TV episode until it slowed down to that noir-ish ending, that didn't really work.
Steve McQueen is the epitome of cool. The entire love interest subplot could of been done without, it adds nothing at all to the movie other than a nice pair of legs (McQueen).
The reasons to watch Bullitt are clear: Car chases, Guns, and Steve McQueen. What holds this movie back is the thin plot - Not much difference from Dirty Harry a few years after this one
I would have thought a movie famous for it's car chase would be a bit faster paced. Anywho: The two chase scenes are great and the lack of music only enhances the action. Great intro and soundtrack. I was tired and fell asleep during watching, but the ending is good stuff and upon review this will probably go up to 75 or 80isch.
Fun, tight thriller with the Cooler King being the king of cool, Steve McQueen. While it doesn't add up to much more than the sum of its parts, its parts are plenty fine. You can hardly avoid mentioning the iconic car chase, and a fantastic car chase it is, too. It draws inspiration from THE LINEUP, and really the movie as a whole would be right at home among some of the better police procedural films noir. It also avoids a lot of the "rogue cop" clichés and doesn't feel too predictable.
Oh you mean there's a romance sub-story in here, after an hour and a half?! Crappy movie aside, watch this for the car chase, seriously it makes the whole movie worth it.
