Another gem from Kieslowski. For a movie about the effect of film-making on life, love, art, the class system, and social politics, it is surprisingly tender and without pretension. Also, Jerzy Stuhr: weak moustache, strong Polski actor.

As with most of Kieslowski's stuff it has that rich humanity to it and it looks great even if less striking than some of his other films. The tragic nature of Filip's relationship with his wife is movingly and beautifully handled, and perhaps my only complaint is that whenever there was a stretch without the wife in (she is pushed to the periphary of the film just as Filip's obsession pushes her to the periphary of his life) I wanted the film to get back to looking at their relationship.

My favorite of Kieslowski's early fiction work, CB presents a portrait of a filmmaker passionate pursuit of his art--from merely learning about the camera to his growing obsession with his art, from fighting for the purity of his work to understanding the fundamentally personal nature of each film he produces. Kieslowski beautifully shows Filip's artistic awakening as a counterpoint to his struggling marriage, refusing to offer easy solutions or empty platitudes to the film's central paradox.

Of all the films made in Kieslowski's Polish phase, this is the one that most closely fits in with the themes of Dekalog, The Double Life of Veronique, and the Three Colors trilogy. Easily the best work of Kieslowski's Polish phase.

A surprisingly rich film, touching on a wide variety of themes. Self-discovery, familial duty, censorship, and of course passion for cinema, and the responsibility of the filmmaker. Kieslowski's most autobiographical work, and his comments on filmmaking are fresh and honest. He realizes that simply pointing a camera at something does not capture the truth, and that films can have consequences. One of the things I love about him is how he never breaks down into black and white, right and wrong.

Filled with "comments on filmmaking" and moral ambiguity. Never approaches the aesthetic of Double Life of Veronique. Also the guy had a fucking lame moustache.
