This tale of a WWII mental ward for fly boys can't decide whether to be a serious look at PTSD or "The Wackiest Mental Ward in the Army." The odd blend might have worked if either the star or the director possessed a sense of humor, but--alas!--neither Peck nor Miller seem to have a feel for comedy. The film lurches from serious scenes to slapstick, and features two textbook examples of overacting: Eddie Albert and Bobby Darin (representing the classical and the method school respectively).
