Carlito's Way wasn't a great movie--it was a decent movie, rendered infinitely rewatchable by superb casting and a fun soundtrack. They tried to recapture that magic here, but the results are spotty. I came into this hearing from other reviews that it isn't a worthy prequel (and doesn't logically make sense as one), so I imagined it was a stand-alone film, and as that, it's a serviceable gangster movie. The ending seems unfairly abrupt and cutesy.

They take a great movie like Carlito's way and sully it with this trash. Someone should be shot for real.

It's ludicrous to believe that you can make a decent prequel to a movie starring Al Pacino and directed by Brian DePalma and still think it's going to turn out all right by casting Jay Hernandez and Sean Combs.
