I'm still stunned by this movie. It's the only horror film, so far, to make me cry. It honestly broke my heart to think how Carrie's life could have ended up if things had turned out differently. It's an excellent film on its own merits, not just as a horror classic - I was really annoyed by the DVD cover's blurb saying it was the "ultimate revenge fantasy" because this film is NOT about revenge. It's about the psychological damage caused by bullying and religious extremism.

"Dirty pillows." Wow. And that final hand-from-the-grave scene still gives me shudders. About the only thing I ever liked from DePalma (despite seasickness from the spin-cycle dance). Throughout the part where she's being elected queen you almost feel like maybe it will all turn around for her (despite the behind-stage hijinks taking place)...which makes the final Dumping of the Bucket all the more heartbreaking. And in hardly any time at all pretty damn scary. What high school meant to me.

I don't blame anyone who says this film is overstylised - early on I would have agreed - but as the film went on I started to like its bizarre decadence; the swirling camera work, the bright colours, the split screen, the music, and yes even the quite garish cues for the power. The prom scene is very sinister due to us viewers already knowing what's coming and the ending is actually pretty scary. Sissy Spacek was great, the prom scene was fantastic and it was just really good fun.

Hardly a horror film. The supernatural elements are merely an accent to the emotional drama. I love the camerawork, and how 70s it all is.

A pearl of the horror genre, a classic. A fairy tale that failed. The result is disturbing and very nice.

Notable for Piper Laurie's delirious performance and the gripping third act, which is brilliantly edited. The early stages can be a bit dull, but mostly just the school stuff.

Underrated by most, Carrie is one of the three finest horror movies ever made (Exorcist 1973 and Alien 1979 being the others). Not because of its scope -- both Exorcist and Alien are far grander in epic sweep -- but because of how well the movie works, and on so many levels. DePalma KILLED. Perhaps his best film.
