Summary: When art student Ben Willis is dumped by his girlfriend Suzy, he develops insomnia. To pass the long hours of the night, he starts working the late night shift at the local supermarket. There he meets a colorful cast of characters, all of whom have their own 'art' in dealing with the boredom of an eight-hour-shift... (imdb)

Needed more nudity to impress me, and some unanswered questions at the end of the film hurt it, but it sorta resonates with me, and it's a really cool idea.

Cashback has a lot of neat ideas sprinkled through but lacks the driven structure of an actually compelling story. It starts on a high note but loses steam through midway, since ts cast of quirky characters and funny tidbits would probably suit a sit com series. That said, the sequences about Ben's childhood are quite good, and the movie is pretty entertaining from a male point of view, (literally and figuratively).

This well-crafted film with an interesting premise (borrowed from Nicholson Baker's "The Fermata") falls down badly because of an unevenness of tone - it doesn't know if it wants to be a moving art film or a sweet, quirky comedy. It basically failed for me because the lead's fantasy life wasn't that far from his real life.

If you've watched this, you've seen the entire original short as well. Successfully expanding it into a feature, just about as good, it adds more poetic scenes (the narration is very good) but also draws a bit too much on convention for the new romantic plotline.

This was a really nice one. Although at first I was not quite sure if the whole concept of undressing woman in a supermarket and draw them would appeal to me (especially since I'm a girl and it sounded quite offensive at first) I really enjoyed this movie. It made me think a lot. The way art is shown and the way life is portrayed was really nice. But there were still some aspects with the love story especially that ruined the movies appeal a bit. Still very much worth watching!

there's a scene in cashback in which the main character walks in a striptease club. at that moment you see the scene from the eyes of ben, you don't see the nude stripper as something to be aroused by, you see her as a form of art herself, and you realize how strong the movie conveys this feeling, and how romantic, funny and introspective this movie is. cashback is a flawed movie with certain aspects of the script lacking coherence, but it's a charming one nonetheless.

Like the short, I still felt this was so fucking creepy at times. A guy undressing girls in a market without their consent for his 'art' will never be okay in my mind. But, unlike the short, the themes were better explored justifying what happens in a way. It still doesn't blend together in the way I think Ellis would have liked it to, but it passes the time.
