Oh the irony of having this recommended by one of my friends over criticker. Well, it's not really news for any of us who's been around since back when the internet were for the freaks only, but still an okay documentary about how people aren't what you think they might be. It's a little long, but essentially a pretty moving story about the internets and the relations we have on there - or think we have. At least my friend Mark is real - unless he's my Tyler Durden.

Hard to rate. The trailers make you think the twist is a thriller, but it's really not. The twist is extremely interesting and disturbing in it's own way, but I wouldn't call it a "thriller" (although they obviously did it just to try to get asses in the seats). People are debating if it's a real documentary or fake (and people will always debate it unless they come out and say it's fake). While I don't think it's fake, I wouldn't be too terribly surprised if they said it was.

It is hard to fathom the depths with which people get involved with catfishing, as if nothing could ever penetrate through the facade to the point that the jig is finally up. But it's especially hard for me because offline I'm a billionaire doctor astronaut lawyer.

Ok beginning, amazing middle, anti climatic ending. The parts that are good are really really good and the other parts are just kinda meh. Was pretty disappointed with the lady's motivation for doing what she did but I was intrigued to find out what it was the entire time. The scene where Nev reads his texts with Megan is one of the most awkwardly funny scenes I've seen in a long time. Really cool filmmaking for obviously no money.

Beautiful and uneasy docu-drama about fractured online identity. The most interesting aspect is the intermingling of real and fake on all levels. The supposed "victim" Nev is also playing a persona - that of a naive, innocent caught up in a unstable woman's games. Its obvious he and the filmmakers figured it out very early on and just like us are going along for the ride. The slick use of social media as a new visual aesthetic - Google maps, Facebook tags, grainy cams - is also effective.

One one hand a suspenseful, paranoid, Hitckcockesque digital-age thriller told through Google earth, facebook and youtube that will make you think twice about online friendships in the future. On the other, a surprising and moving comment on the dark side of the social networking experience. The lo-fi aesthetics of the first part work really well but it is the almost unbelievable subject matter of the last part that will stay with you for some time.

Fairly certain this entire venture start-to-finish is fictitious - but that Angela woman is a good actor. The others, though, really seem like they are acting. And if it truly is real, well, the whole thing is pretty douchy if you ask me. Still, the subject matter is interesting enough, if not exactly groundbreaking news, and you feel for Angela in the end. It's not bad and sorta entertaining, but it certainly didn't feel like a real documentary and the main guy was very annoying.

Interesting, captivating and thought provoking. The twist isn't as huge as you'd expect, pulls emotional punches that stretch about 40 minutes throughout the aftermath. How it starts and scenes leading up to the twist are all especially well done. Impressive documentary.

Fake or not, the awkwardness just doesnt seem to stop... The lies just keeps piling up and you cant feel nothing but sorry. Not a well crafted documentary, but it touches upon themes that are extremely important in this social network age that we live in. How far can you take it and are anyone truly themselves online where we stage ourself as we wanna be seen and thereby bulding better alter ego versions of yours truly... Its very interesting but also very sad...

I'm so conflicted. Like a lot of people, I was told how amazing the twist is. Because of events in my life, it just really isn't that surprising, and I can't see how it is to anybody with the net. It's a good movie up until the twist... it's interesting, kind of creepy at one point. After it, it loses a lot but is still decent. Ultimately the movie goes from probably what could have been an 80 to a 60. But expectations really killed this.. the twist is not that interesting. It's obvious.

Creepy, awkward, funny, tense and also a little bit sad. It's more than likely fake and wasn't a thriller either (Wtf trailer makers?) You could see what was going to happen from a mile away but it didn't make it any less disturbing. Easy to watch if not very well put together.

An original, real-life suspense/thriller for the digital age. I thought it was a faux-documentary with horror elements based on what I'd read ahead of time about the movie, but the horror was more based in the real world than something supernatural. I really enjoyed Catfish and while there weren't any "oh no they didn't" type of twists, it still kept you guessing even when you thought you knew what was happening. Highly recommended.

Of all the mockumentary fake-or-real films I've seen, it's one of the more succesful, as it lures you into the whole thrill and suspense fully believing what you see. Later you won't be so sure what's real. But you won't be sure what's unreal, either. So all in all, you're just pretty damned unsure. So ... succes on that front. Unfortunately I found the latter part of the movie quite boring, as the plot loses the fierce intensity of the first 2/3 of the film.

It's disturbingly poignant, intriguing and serves as a mild but smart example of how disappointing social-networking relationships can be. Criticker's recommendation settings really misses the idea of usefulness when it fails to tell the difference between documentary and docudrama. This film was all story and science. Compelling, and an enjoyably uneasy watch. The reveal isn't as shocking or as unprecedented as advertised, and to be honest is pretty obvious. That said it is far from disappointing, and oddly touching. Critic Danny Leigh hit the nail on the head when he said that if this is a planned hoax then this isn't great filmmaking at all, but if this is just a fluke of situation, then you have to say that "Catfish" has been rather well put together. Hmmmm.... interesting.

Real or staged? It's probably somewhere inbetween. Either way, this is an interesting watch where construction is thematized in more ways than one (persona, feelings, argument). Nev and the woman he seeks out both enjoyed their communication [Mild spoilers ahead] and it's not entirely clear who the injured party is. Nev is either unbelieavably naive (doubtful), willingly decieved, or faking. What's fascinating are their different reasons to connect online and Nev's background is the least clear.

I hadn't seen any previews for the film at all, and also didn't hear anything regarding it prior to watching it. For that reason, the twist wasn't completely obvious, and I found it pretty creepy. There's a lot of humor, but the biggest thing I took away from it was how uneasy the scenes were with Nev and Angela. If the movie wasn't pre-planned, that's an insanely scary situation, and a real eye opener to the odd lives some people lead.

One of those movies you will enjoy most not knowing anything about it before hand. It is fun, suspenseful and touching little "documentary". I kept thinking how ridiculous it was that the film-makers expect a viewer to believe that any of it is real.. Its obviously either re-enactments or just completely fabricated. Either way, not particularly exciting past the half way point. The movie just drags on and on after the twist is revealed halfway through, and frankly I really didn't care about Angela and her life, which the movie focuses on for at least a half hour.

Ideally, this film must be seen with the slightest possible amount of presuppositions and prior knowledge. Also, it seems apparent that the quality of this movie lies somewhere in between of what we believe to be authentic, and what we believe to be constructed. Several segments of the film are faked to make the documentarians look like naive victims. These segments are meant to provide justification for exploiting this woman and her family, which I find disgusting. That said, Catfish becomes more reflective in its final 20 minutes. Even though it entertains, provokes thought, and is emotive Catfish is a dishonest and exploitative documentary that should have been canned or carried out in a more honest way. btw fuck hipster clark kent

Nicely organic and the characters react genuinely, which is more than half the battle with a docufiction/cinema verite movie. Points for having the characters use and be seen using Google/Facebook/iPhones like real people. The denouement drags, and in the end the reality of the movie probably isn't more than "inspired by true events", but this is an extremely clean and measured film.

The fact that most of it is clearly fake doesn't detract from this as a whole, although a couple of people, especially the director, are really bad actors. There is a surprising amount of suspense, especially when they're checking out the farm. And then the third act is a surprisingly touching little character study, which is probably worth the price of admission in itself. Like many others I am of two minds as to whether the events in this film are real or if it's more of a found-footage mumblecore film. Either way it's rather entertaining but discussing the plot would ruin much of the appeal of the film. It's a surprisingly concise and well-edited film - the story beats are the only necessary ones and the film manages to fit a lot in, likely due to the ability of a documentary to deliver lots of exposition. Tell, not show, and both at the same time.

It takes a little while to get 'Catfish' started, but once events become strange, you're hooked. Full credit to the Schulman brothers and Joost for confronting everything head-on and always digging deeper. The film is at its best when they guys are discovering the truth under each and every text and email. As misleading as the events may have been, they still manage to be respectful and find some of the good in the situation, although that may have contributed to it losing a bit of steam.

One of the dark sides of the internet illuminated. Catfishing is real, whether or not this doc is not, this 'needed' to be made. Nev unveils bullies, depressed and troubled people, with this film and his show for what they truly are. Angela, whatever she did wrong, needed help and that is what she got. Top badass moment? I’ve always wanted to plant a woodland big enough to appear on a 1:25,000 scale OS map, so when a cartographer comes along and asks what it's called, I could decide. This film manages the linguistic version of that. Fake or real, that’s badass. Personally I don’t have a single friend on Facebook, although when I do get a request it’s usually from a beautiful woman. Call me suspicious, but I remember the Reader's Digest prize draws.
