A film about the magic of narrative and how it impels us to participate playfully in its creation. The "story"--of two goofy girlfriends who repeatedly enter an old house, becoming part of the melodrama that reenacts itself within--often appears aimless, but if the viewer is patient throughout the three hours, he will be rewarded with much charm, a little wisdom, and a lovely view of Paris in the summer. If "Inland Empire" were optimistic and life-affirming, it might look something like this.

It's photographed like an intimate home video, and the editing is Fulleresque; cutting on movement, into an action. Curiouser and curiouser, an engrossing and mind-boggling film.
Also, there is not much boating in it.

A very very long film, but a worthwhile rumination on the nature of film itself. Also, it's really, really, REALLY weird. Still, the chemistry and sexual tension between the two leads is incredible. The story takes a LONG time to unfold, but the last quarter of the movie is incredibly suspenseful and incredibly gripping in the kind of logic that would later become David Lynch's trademark.

A joyous love letter to cinema, storytelling, magic and, encapsulating all three of the aforementioned, imagination (and the imagination on show is never short of delightful with its odd playful logic). Rivette manages to create moments of pure cinematic magic among the everyday, whilst the film's mysteries and strange, surreal tale are both captivating and the little details of the thing as well as how it all reveals itself to you both had me elated. In short, I adored it.

A pretty fun, neat film that unfortunately drags at several points. I had to do a sort of class project on this movie and it's honestly a lot more fun to talk about than to watch, so I'll give it a decent score and say it's one of those films that I'm much happier for having seen but not racing to rewatch.

In some ways a rip-off of Daisies, but enough differences to make it fresh. In Chytilova's film, the girls are playful forces of destruction; here they are playful forces of creativity. This film is really about the power and joy of imagination, and it's executed in a way that incorporates surreal elements without ever getting too confusing. It does get rather tedious at times, though, and most of scenes are lingered on far longer than necessary. The girls are alternately charming and annoying.

It's not a film for everyone but as far as I'm concerned it's a wonderfully put together experience. A combination of French New Wave with a surreal plot, it follows two young women who meet by chance and investigate a strange mystery. It's long and not very quickly paced, but it has a lot of great endearing and amusing moments to keep the viewer interested.

Excruciatingly slow and lengthy (over 3 hours) with no payoff to speak of, every scene in this movie drags on for a good couple of minutes after its point is made. I also found it derivative of Chytilova's "Daisies" and Moullet's "Brigitte et Brigitte" for obvious reasons, as well as Agnes Varda, for instance the Tarot reading at the beginning. Unoriginal, boring and way overrated.

Whimsical feminist fantasy, supposedly inspired by Carroll and James. It's also an indulgent and tedious exercise in actor-therapy, and one all audiences in general should be spared. If you want to see this sort of thing done right, go for Sedmikrasky.
