Apart from the strange, too long and pointless clocks & dancing maids scenes this is still the story we all know. Bonus points for the last, well composed painting-like action shot.

Compared to the teeny little films Melies had been doing, this is an epic. Almost six whole minutes long. More than one shot, even! (Gasp!) Despite some interesting odd touches thrown in, however, Melies cannot overcome the extreme familiarity of this materlal. He had not learned that you should end a movie at its dramatic climax... or shortly afterwards, anyway

Méliès is best when he is doing an original idea, but of course this is still decent.

Though a little hastily edited and occasionally needlessly bizarre, it's an entertaining film. Méliès was certainly very talented.
